Whale Sparkles and Textures

We went on a whale watch and saw multiple whales, including a mother and calf.  I was struck by form and texture in general, particularly the swaths of smooth and bumps.

The flipper, which at first seems so straight, can curve unexpectedly.  Ridges seem random and like a skyline, but of course even a skyline is not random, and neither are these ridges I expect.

There were more ridges other places...

That's not an alligator or a pickle, it is the top of the whale's mouth...

The back bone, a nice serraded row:

What power along that mostly smooth back. The last shows the double blow-holes opening (not ridges, but cool, and this view gives the fin and back in context).
